Tourism will be one of Australia’s largest employers and wealth creators in the next decade, with the number of Australians working in the sector set to almost double according to new research developed by the Tourism and Transport Forum and tourism economists, Stafford Strategy.
The research report, Tourism: Supercharging Australia’s Future, has also found that overall tourism spending is expected to grow by around $74 billion (or 57 per cent) to $204 billion by 2026 and is poised to leapfrog manufacturing as our biggest employer.
But despite the rosy outlook the report also examines impediments to such growth with adequate infrastructure and barriers to private sector tourism investment identified as critical if Australia is to capitalise on the opportunities the sector provides.
