The northern part of United States and Canada is now experiencing brutal record breaking cold winds and snowfall and there is a warning of deep freeze in the New Year which can tarnish the tourism.

The weather observers said the temperature on top of the highest peak in the US north-east hit -37 degrees Celsius, a record low. The previous record at the Mount Washington Observatory in New Hampshire was -35C and was set in 1933.

The forecasters said the temperature in the city was likely to dip under -12C, well below the typical average low for the day. In Times Square, there are thousands were bundled up for a chill that hit the city.

On the other side of the country, a cold front bearing down on the Pacific Northwest was expected to dump as much as 1 metre of snow in parts of Washington and the northern Rocky Mountains.

There are the forecasters warned hypothermia and frostbite could set in as the Arctic Air settled in.

The Canadian authorities meanwhile showed a deep concern on the extreme cold warnings for much of the Alberta and Saskatchewan provinces, with large parts of Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec also affected.
