Wizz Air expands with $17 bn Airbus deal

During the Dubai airshow the European low-cost carrier Wizz Air consented on a $17 billion deal to buy 146 Airbus A320 neo-class aircraft.

The airline is expected to take the delivery of 72 A320neo and 74 A321neo aircraft. It was expected that first of these new fuel-efficient aircraft will join the fleet in 2022, the bulk is expected to arrive in 2025 and 2026.


The purchase was agreed upon after a competitive selection process that Wizz Air had taken. The carrier which operates in central and eastern Europe has previously done business with Airbus and had ordered 110 A321 neo aircraft in 2015.

It was stated under the terms of the deal that Wizz Air could raise and lower the requirement for each aircraft type according to future requirements.


József Váradi, Wizz Air’s chief executive officer said that over the years Airbus has delivered the perfect mix of aircraft, cost efficiency, support and price. They were convinced that Airbus A320neo and A321neo will be the game –changer aircraft for Wizz Air. So far, it has continued to grow at an industry-leading rate and expand the market reach across and beyond Europe.


It was expected that the next-step technology aircraft will enable to lower the operating costs adhering to the goal of Wizz Air being the lowest fare and lowest unit cost airline in Europe.


With the placement of the new order Wizz Air outstanding orders with Airbus will be 282 aircraft.
