The Statue of Liperty: Heathrow installs two-storey Statue of Liberty replica made using

The Statue of Liberty, one of the most iconic landmarks in the world and home to Heathrow’s most popular destination, has undergone a dramatic cosmetic transformation today. Quite literally, as she has been immortalised in lipstick.

The ‘Statue of Liperty’, a towering two-storey-high replica of the Statue of Liberty made using actual lipstick, was unveiled this morning at Heathrow Terminal 5. She was created to celebrate the launch of the airport’s first International Lipstick Colours of the Year report, showcasing the most en vogue lipstick shades in 50 destinations around the world right now.

Sculpted using the shade of classic red lipstick that’s currently in fashion with New Yorkers and beauty-conscious visitors to the Big Apple, the glamorous Statue of Liperty stands 20-feet-tall atop a base resembling a giant lipstick casing. In total it took a team of sculptors, engineers and makeup artists over 240 hours to complete and will be wowing passengers at Terminal 5 for the next month.

Jonathan Coen, Retail Director at Heathrow said: “As the UK’s hub airport, we’ve got our finger on the pulse of international beauty, with over 120 brands, 12,500 beauty products and 1,451 lipsticks under our roof. We launched the International Lipstick Colours of the Year report to reveal the lipstick looks people are wearing across the world, right now, and the trends that are driving them. We’re looking forward to seeing travellers’ reactions to our giant Statue of Liperty – it’s an amazing month-long addition to Heathrow.”

As part of the month-long International Lipstick Colours of the Year showcase, Heathrow has also commissioned a range of regular-sized lipsticks which have iconic attractions meticulously hand-carved into them by one of the world’s leading micro-sculptors, the UK’s Hedley Wiggan.

Terminal 5 passengers will have the opportunity to view these famous landmarks hewn from lipstick, albeit at the opposite end of the size scale to the colossal creation that is Lady Liperty.

The diminutive lipstick landmarks were created with nothing more than a magnifying glass, carving knife and remarkably steady hands. The carvings are based on London’s Big Ben, and landmarks in four of the most popular destinations visited from Heathrow: Paris’s Eiffel Tower, Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, Shanghai’s eponymous Tower and of course New York’s Statue of Liberty.

As with the Statue of Liperty, the carvings have been created using the most popular lipstick shades being worn this year[1], as identified in the International Lipstick Colours of the Year report:

  • New York – Bright Red shade
  • London – Caramel Nude shade
  • Paris – Dusky Rose shade
  • Shanghai – Sheer Coral shade
  • Dubai – Rose Pink shade

The individual lipstick shades trending in 50 cities across the world were discovered by carefully analysing World Duty Free’s lipstick sales across Heathrow’s extensive flight schedule, gathering insights from Heathrow’s beauty team and the unrivalled knowledge of award-winning beauty journalist Alice Hart-Davis.

This combined beauty expertise was used as the foundation for the International Lipstick Colours of the Year report. beauty also includes beauty product suggestions and expert makeup tips to achieve each of the destination beauty looks.

Commenting on the International Lipstick Colours of the Year report, beauty journalist Alice Hart-Davis, said: “Lipstick punches way above its weight. It’s a tiny thing but it makes a massive difference to the way you look – and to the way you feel. It can change your mood and boost your morale in five seconds flat. Heathrow offers an amazing range of lipstick shades and textures and this helpful guide to international lipstick trends is sure to provide a little inspiration for people looking to try a new look and emulate the beauty trends of women across the world.”
