Hotel Indigo Newark Downtown Officially Opens

NEWARK, NJ—InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has officially opened Hotel Indigo Newark Downtown—the brand’s third hotel in the New York Metro area.

The 108-room Hotel Indigo Newark Downtown is located at 810 Broad St., near the Prudential Center—home of the New Jersey Devils. The boutique hotel, owned by The Hanini Group, LLC and managed by Crestline Hotels & Resorts, Inc., is housed in the historic National State Bank Building, which had been vacant.
Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka; Scott O'Neil, CEO of the New Jersey Devils; and Mark Grier, vice chairman of Prudential Financial joined IHG along with the hotel’s ownership and management companies at the official ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 26.

“Hotel Indigo Downtown Newark is designed to reflect the local culture, character and history of its surrounding location,” Jason Moskal, VP of lifestyle brands at IHG, told Hotel Business. “This boutique hotel sits on one of the busiest corners in New Jersey, making it easy to walk around the neighborhood and discover the local scene.”

Hotel Indigo Downtown Newark celebrates Newark’s history of innovation and commerce, telling the story of modern innovation over time, including a young Thomas Edison’s work to invent the stock ticker in the area, according to the company. The Newark neighborhood story inspired the hotel’s design through art, photography and architecture.

The mosaic tile mural of Edison’s ticker tape writer displayed in the lobby was created by local artists from Glass Roots, a local community organization dedicated to promoting youth development through the arts. Additionally, guestrooms and corridors feature artwork inspired by Edison’s stock ticker.

“In the 19th century, Newark boomed with innovators across a variety of industries, such as tanneries, breweries and mass communication,” said Moskal. “Guests will be inspired by the neighborhood story uncovered within the Hotel Indigo Newark Downtown, which captures the rise of modern industry within a stylish boutique hotel setting.”
The historic nature of the building, which dates back to 1912, is preserved through the exposed brick visible in guestrooms and public areas, with the furniture and upholstery embodying a vintage feel.
The hotel is helping to further the revitalization efforts of the area as it continues to develop as a vibrant and cosmopolitan destination. According to The Hanini Group, LLC, more than 50% of the hotel’s team members are locals themselves.
Hotel Indigo Downtown Newark’s guestrooms feature hardwood and concrete flooring with area rugs. Each room features an iPad with options to browse the Internet, adjust window shade and temperature settings, order room service and make service requests.
The hotel offers restaurant ALVA and café Workshop, which offers seasonal and locally sourced food from local vendors like the Military Park Farmer’s Market, and a special blend of coffee made exclusively for the hotel by TM Ward Coffee, a brand that has been in Newark for the last 145 years. The restaurant helps preserve the historic nature of the building with unique touches including the conversion of the original bank vault into a pizza oven. The hotel also features Skylab, the only rooftop bar in Downtown Newark, providing panoramic views of the New York City skyline and locally inspired cocktails.
The property’s amenities include a 24-hour fitness center and meeting space for up to 45 people in the Edison Room. The hotel features the brand’s new Neighborhood Guide, a touchscreen display that connects guests to each other, the local neighborhood and to Hotel Indigo locations around the world.
