Business up 26% for Copenhagen

As the books are closing on 2014, Copenhagen has experienced yet another record-breaking year in terms of future events secured. 72 international conventions and 341 corporate meetings and incentive leads were added to the list of events taking place in Copenhagen in the near future making 2014 the fourth consecutive record year in terms of bid and lead wins.

The number of bids and leads won in 2014 shows that event organisers are fully aware of Copenhagen’s strong appeal. A record number of both international conventions and corporate events have chosen Copenhagen to be their host city, underlining the Danish capital’s position as a world-class meetings destination.

Danish strong points
Copenhagen is a university city and has a long tradition as a knowledge hub with an especially strong reputation within clean-tech, life-tech, human rights and IT, to mention a few key fields, all of which are important for those who arrange association congresses. The city’s strenghts were mirrored in some of the bid wins for 2014.
Among the congress wins are the prestigious Women Deliver 2016, a conference organised to bring into focus the rights, health, and well-being of girls and women around the world.

Denmark is known as a strong advocate of women’s and girls’ rights and the conference brings together over 5,000 attendees ranging from high profile First Ladies such as HRH Crown Princess Mary of Denmark and Hilary Clinton, to impoverished midwifes from Bangladesh.
Another congress secured was the World Hydrogen Energy Congress 2020, WHEC, bringing 1,500 delegates to the world’s most well-known conference in the field of hydrogen energy and fuel cells.

The 27th Congress of the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) 2017 is also on the list of congresses won in 2014. ISTB is expected to attract 2,500 doctors, scientists and exhibitors to Copenhagen over the course of four days.
The increase in won bids and leads from 2013’s 57 and 271 respectively, equals an increase of 26 per cent. This record-breaking result is ascribable to the close cooperation between Wonderful Copenhagen CVB, the partners in Meetingplace Wonderful Copenhagen and VisitDenmark.

In total the 72 congresses and 341 meetings and incentive leads represents more than 367.000 nights.
2014 was also record-breaking in terms of room nights and airport traffic with 9 million commercial room nights and 25,6 million airport passengers.
What makes Copenhagen an attractive host city?
Copenhagen’s infrastructure is ranked one of the most efficient in the world and has also been ranked world’s most walkable city. Public transportation makes it easy to navigate, and the city is home to the world’s busiest bicycle lane used by 36,000 cyclists per day.

In 2014, Copenhagen was once again ranked the World’s Most Livable City, cementing its reputation as a clean and safe destination offering a high quality of life for Copenhageners and event attendees alike.

Add to that, Copenhagen offers that extra something having made sustainable meetings management a key priority and focusing on meetings design, recently embodied by the Danish Meetovation Concept. Both of these aspects have strengthened the city’s profile as an innovative and sustainable destination.
