Food Research Helps Drive New East Midlands Trains Menu

Rail passengers fall into three categories when choosing the food they eat on the train, according to new research* released today by East Midlands Trains and catering partner, SSP.

Around half of the passengers (47%) were classed as ‘Fuellers’, looking for simple, familiar food that would help them refuel during their journey. A further 28% were ‘Passionate Foodies’, who demonstrated a real appreciation of quality food. ‘Explorers’ made up the third group of passengers, looking for a new experience and for food that would give them enjoyment.

And now East Midlands Trains is launching a brand new range of spring and summer menus for First Class travellers based on this research, designed to offer its customers the exact range of food they are looking for during their journey.

The new menu, available from Tuesday 27 May, promises to offer something to suit everybody’s taste and needs – from the traditional Great British Breakfast which remains a firm hit with customers, to the new Croque Provencal (“The Laptop’s Friend”) offering a quick and easy lunchtime snack whilst working, to the more exotic spicy Lamb Kofta. For the first time, the menu will also provide information on Gluten free and Healthy Choice (under 500 calorie) options available.

Breakfast will remain free of charge on services arriving into London before 10.00 on weekdays. Since the launch of free breakfast in October 2013, East Midlands Trains has served over 25,000 complimentary bacon and sausage rolls to its passengers. A range of new breakfast options will be available for passengers from 27 May, including the ‘East Midlands Benedict’ with a choice of filling including bacon, salmon or mushroom and tomato, as well as Kedgeree and a range of different porridges for the more health conscious traveller.

Andrew Conroy, Head of On Train Service for East Midlands Trains, said “Our new menu reflects the differing taste buds of our thousands of First Class customers and will offer a wide range of options to suit everybody’s palate.

“The quality of food and range of choice is better than ever before and our customers can be guaranteed a First Class food experience, whether they’re Fuellers, Foodies or Explorers!

“We’ll continue to serve breakfast free of charge and hope that the new choices, such as the East Midlands Benedict, will be a big hit with our customers.

“We’re really excited about the launch of our new menus, and whether travelling for business or leisure, we’re certain that our customers will enjoy the new food options.”

The new East Midlands Trains First Class menu options include:

Breakfast – Old-time favourites such as the Great British Breakfast and Smoked Salmon and Scrambled Egg will join the new options of Kedgeree and the ‘East Midlands Benedict’. Based on customer feedback, other new items include the simple but delicious eggs and bacon, scrambled eggs and waffles with maple syrup.

Lighter bites and salads – passengers can choose from the Croque Provencial (The Laptop’s Friend!), just the thing to eat on the go, or the new Chicken and Ham Summer Pie. A Chef’s Salad and Classic Caesar Salad offer a tasty summer lunch option.

Main meals – Served all day, the choices range from the exotic spicy Lamb Kofta with steamed rice or Kerala Chicken Curry, to the more classical East Midlands Ploughman’s or a hearty beef burger. A slow cooked Chilli Con Carne and a new vegetarian Spanish Rice dish complete the menu.

In addition, customers can choose from a range of soups and filled country rolls with torn ham hock, premium chicken breast or grated cheddar cheese.
