Tasting Australia celebrates food for all ages

Tasting Australia will provide food for thought with three events exploring the issues around feeding an aging population. Designed to show that food can be enjoyed at any age, aged care day will take place today in the Tasting Australia hub Town Square.

Minister for Tourism Leon Bignell said aged care day shows the versatility of Tasting Australia’s program comprised of eat, share and think sessions.

“The Tasting Australia festival is not only a celebration of eating and drinking, but is designed to get you thinking about the issues beyond the plate,” Mr Bignell said.

“Aged care day is a perfect example of events that showcase South Australia’s fantastic produce and explore the issues around food that our aging population faces.

“Five experienced aged care chefs will show that delicious food can be created on a low budget when they create a signature dish for under four dollars in the Every Dollar Counts session.”

The emphasis on aged care food follows Tasting Australia patron Maggie Beer’s recent campaign launch to improve the quality of food in aged care homes.

While the chefs are hard at work in Every Dollar Counts, the Aged Care Panel featuring chefs and industry experts will tackle the issues of aged care food before judging the four dollar dishes.

Former chef to the royal family Peter Morgan Jones will showcase the science of food and highlight innovations in aged care food in When I’m 65 – Aged Care Kitchen Technology.

“Getting older doesn’t mean that you lose interest in food and renowned chef Peter Morgan Jones will show just how exciting food can be at any age,” Mr Bignell said.

“South Australia is home to an abundance of fresh and local produce and Tasting Australia’s events encourage people of all ages to celebrate food.”

Tasting Australia presented by Thomas Foods will run from 27 April to 4 May 2014. Tickets are available from Ticketek. Visit the Tasting Australia website for more information.
