Lufthansa feels the heat of competition from Turkish Airlines

Two key members of Star Alliance; Germany's Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines are too ambitious to still be a friend.

Turkish Airlines becomes a competitor of Lufthansa. The German group has decided to suspend its codeshare agreements with Turkish Airlines.

Turkish Airlines’ continued growth with its service quality and extensive flight network becomes too successful in wooing Lufthansa customers, particularly those flying long-haul that Lufthansa starts cutting back Miles and More status miles when passengers fly with Turkish Airlines.

Effective from January 2014, Lufthansa passengers who book Turkish Airlines flights will earn 75 per cent fewer status miles. However, there will be no cut back when they book other Star Alliance members.

According to German media, Lufthansa and Austrian will suspend codeshare agreement with Turkish Airlines as of March 31, 2014.

Turkish Airlines released an official statement regarding to the decision of Lufthansa. The official statement is as follows.

Turkish Airlines continues to grow with its service quality and extensive flight network.

Acting with fair competition conditions in all over the world, Turkish Airlines works to provide the better service to its passengers.

Turkish Airlines provides its services to also all passengers of Star Alliance’ member airlines, as being a member of it. Code-share flights and Frequent Flyer Programme (FFP) applications should be considered in this context.

We do not approve the unilateral decision of Lufthansa that taken on these two issues and hope to be reconsidered.
