World's biggest airport opened

Dubai on last Sunday opened passenger operations at its second airport, Al-Maktoum International, titled to be the world's largest once it is completed.

A Wizz Air service from Budapest with 100 passengers on board was the first to touch down at the sprawling new facility, and it was welcomed on the tarmac with a water cannon salute.

Jazeera Airways also joined the launch celebrations of Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central (DWC) on Sunday, with the operation of a ceremonial flight by Jazeera Airways from Kuwait to Al Maktoum International carrying government officials and media from Kuwait. Jazeera Airways Group Chairman, Marwan Boodai, said, “We’re glad to be one of the first airlines and the first one in the region to extend our support to the newly-opened DWC which aims to be one of the leading airports in the world in the coming years in terms of both capacity and size.

Bahrain's national carrier, Gulf Air, will also begin operations on December 8.

No other airlines have announced intentions to use the new airport, which locates some 50 kilometres south of Dubai International Airport.
